Ambitious Redditors who have successfully pulled yourself up by your own boot straps, what's your story?

Not me but my parents.

Both of them grew up dodging bullets in a Communist shithole, where they engaged in speech that made them subversives to the regime. They escaped to a neighboring country and remained there for some time before securing transportation to the United States in the mid 1980's. My mom would have only been 19 or 20 by this time, and my father would have been in his mid-20's.

In the US they were granted asylum as political refugees, and allowed to attend college. My mom went to community college to get her Associates and then finished her Undergrad at a public college. Dad went straight into a large state school. Both of them worked multiple jobs to graduate without debt.

Dad worked for the government after that, and still does. Mom worked as a corporate accountant for a major tech company, and eventually got promoted to upper management. They payed for her to get her MBA at a good school. She moved on some years later and is now the CFO at some investment company.

Honestly I'll be happy if I ever accomplished half of what they did.
