American Redditors: if you own one, why did you buy a gun?

One night I heard a banging on my door and my dog is going nuts. I look through the "peep hole" in my door and see a girl with blood on her face and her hair all jacked up. I open the door and she busts in my living room and tells me that her boyfriend is chasing her. As I begin to shut the front door something solid hits it.. So I throw shoulder into the door and shut it. As I am going for the dead bolt she says "he has a gun." So I locked the door as quickly as possibly and begin to get out of line of sight of the door. But I was unable to move both myself and the girl away from the door before he fired shots into the house. He fired 3 shots in a horizontal line from right to left. The first shot hit her in the small of her back and the other two bounced around in my house.

This was the part when my brain switched into turbo, analyzing every possible outcome of this situation. And I did not like any of them, because I did not own a single firearm. So, I decided to bluff as much as possible, yelling that if he came in my house I would "take his fucking head off." I heard a few clicking noises and what sounded like a hand full of change landing on concrete. Then silence.. for 10-15 minutes, nothing. In the meantime my wife was in the closet with our dog calling the police. So the police dispatcher informs me the police are at our location, so I peek through the window. And sure enough there is an absolute ton of lights and dudes with big fucking guns out there. So I open the front door (at this time still in my underwear because this shit happened at 1:30 am and I was watching netflix) and begin walking out bare footed onto 1 inch of shattered glass with my hands in the air.

The officers asked me if the man was inside, I said no. Then one of the officers spotted a body laying on the ground on the side of my yard and he yelled for help. Without being asked I told them he was not with us, the dude wasn't moving. Anyways to make a somewhat long story shorter, he had shot himself in the head after attempting to get into my house via the basement door and failed (my neighbors saw him try and then start pacing around in my drive way). He was apparently very emotionally disturbed and was very violent to his girlfriend.

The girl was taken to the hospital and survived. She is however paralyzed from the waist down and still has the bullet lodged in her spine (it was a shitty 380 round, when it hit her in the back it bounced off her ribs and landed in her spine just above her hips). Because of the fear of uncertainty that night, I now own a gun (9mm) and would without hesitation kill someone attempting to come into my home and cause my wife or I harm.

TL:DR Guy shot a girl in my house, I feared for the life of my wife and I so now I own a gun.
