Americans, how do you justify being the richest nation on Earth and having to pay for college?

I'd like to do some calculations to see if it is. Earn €36k after I pay my pension (+bonuses that get taxed at 50%). I come home with €28600 I have free public health and private Heath insurance covered by my job. Mortgage is 12k per year. I pay 6k of that. Only debt is car loan at 3k per year which I think everyone pays in one shape or form for a car. Spend 1k a year on gas (ours is 5x the price of yours mostly due to tax) Another 1k on bills. I have a degree which cost about 1500 in total which I paid there and then.

If I'm ever out of work the social is 10k per year tax free, and so is maternity for 6 months but most jobs pay you.

So I'm left with about 1400 per month to play with. But if you consider the 23% vat on most things (some stuff has reduced or none and some has way more like alcohol and cigarettes). I'm actually only getting 1140 from that.
