So it’s okay to have these stereotypes? It’s okay to label all Indian men as rapists and horndogs, to see all Indians as “uncivilized” (spoiler, the britishers did not “civilize” us, they divided us and sent our development back a century)?

So white/developed countries don’t have rapists and other human rights violations? You don’t think Dutch imperialists ever raped the black women they conquered? You don’t remember the rape of nanking? That shit was within a century of today! It’s not like Japan or America (good god I could go on about america) or even Britain has their lack of human rights violations, but they’re never labeled negatively with stereotypes like India is.

In any case, a lot of Indians are against these human rights violations too! My mother grew up with a single mother and three sisters, so she knows these horrors firsthand, and both she and my dad are diehard feminists. Hell, she’s even more open minded than most of the moms around here! Having a mom who isn’t homophobic in South Carolina is like owning a unicorn.

I also think I speak for all Indian men living abroad (I’m American) when I say these negative stereotypes have fucked me up beyond belief from the day I was born. Every white girl I met growing up thought I was creepy because I was brown, and the guys all disliked me because I was gay. I had a lonely childhood. I got called “Raj,” “apu,” “baljeet,” everything really, and those words hurt. I can’t even tell a girl her makeup looks good because I’m scared she’ll think I’m a creep (I am AGGRESSIVELY gay, got the voice and everything, so no fear of people thinking I’m straight).

Sorry to dump all this out on you, all these comments just make me so fucking mad. It irks me that a primarily left-leaning subreddit of people who claim not to be racist can excuse such racism and stereotypes just because it’s about Indians. The media exacerbates this issue (phineas in ferb, the simpsons, Big Bang theory, to name a few) and we never call it out because there’s no one to back us up. Asians in general are taught to be “model minorities” who just take racism point blank because we’re taught we aren’t worth more than that. We are.
