Anthropologists of Reddit, What is something that people in the Western world can't get their heads around that is very normal in other cultures (and has been for ages)?

I lived in Taiwan and China for a while and there are a lot of things you start to realize about how people think at a deeper, cultural level that is just really different from the way I think.

I can't be very clear about it, but for example listening to your teacher/parents/elders/higher-ups is really culturally ingrained. It is changing I think, slowly, as people are starting to have discussions about education and how to raise children, etc. But a lot of the time it is not okay to question what your teacher or parents say, you just have to follow.

In Taiwan I found during things like birthdays or whatever, the birthday boy's job would be to make sure everyone else is having a good time. The birthday boy/girl is kind of like a host for everyone else, and they will often spend a lot of money on food/drinks for their friends, instead of the other way around.

The concept of cheating on your boyfriend or girlfriend is not as big of a deal in Taiwan, I find. They seem to be able to separate "girlfriend" and "friend with benefits" and have both at the same time without any real guilt. Not everyone, but my friends in smaller towns/cities do not really have a problem with it. I find that girls hate being cheated on, of course, but guys do not care about cheating, and a lot of girls do not mind being a friend with benefits and openly understand that the guy is cheating on his girlfriend with them.

The thing about time has already been mentioned, but Chinese/Taiwanese (depending on how rural the area is) are also very slow and la-di-dah about time/appointments. I find Taipei (the capital of Taiwan) to actually be very frustrating because it masquerades as a developed, fast-paced city, but Taiwanese people are a pretty slow, relaxed people - the slow pace of Taiwanese and the fast pace required by the city really do not mesh. As it seems like things should be moving quickly, it's frustrating when they don't (people not on time for things, people walking ungodly slow on the sidewalks etc.).
