Why are evil stories about your employer that made you quit/want to quit?

I used to work in a factory packaging/building parts and a new shift manager just transferred from a different city. He didn't really know what he was doing; he seemed really green to be honest. But every person worked their own line, took care of their own line. Cleaning, counting parts used/parts needed for next shift & breaking down boxes. Since I was on a line that was kind of slow he tasked me with helping break down boxes on another line. I thought, "Yeah, alright, I'll help em out. They're pretty new and that line is pretty intense" (I've worked that line before and you are working all the time you are not on break. It wasn't long (maybe a week or two) before they decided "Nah, I'll just chill, talk with my friends & be on my phone," I said fuck that shit, told the manager (politely as I could, in hindsight I was maybe a little irritable? I was only 18 at the time) that I would not be breaking down boxes for them anymore.
For some reason this asshole really wanted me to break their boxes down, he told me I could break down their boxes or leave. I refused to leave, so he threatened to call the cops me (c'mon man) I said "Alright," waited about 2 & 1/2 hours & told him I needed to take a half day, (by this time the boxes were more than waist high), oddly enough he said "Okay," A co-worker told me later that when the shift manager started breaking them down he'd head over and help him out but as soon as the manager left, he left too (and it wasn't long after he started helping him)
I was honestly surprised coming in on Monday that I still had a job. He didn't look at me, acknowledge my existence or even tell me what I needed to do that day. So I went back to my post and noticed the plant manager was very intently looking at the shift manager and the line in question. Being me, I didn't really pay attention to what happened after that but it was less than three weeks, before I found another job working in a pizza joint. I would have to be very desperate to work in a factory again, it was one of the most miserable experiences of my life.
