Ariel Pink and the Cognitive Dissonance We Sometimes Have With the Music We Love

Finding out that Morrisey is a racist has made me vastly less inclined to check out his music.

I've no dog in the Morrissey thing, but he's sued several publications that have accused him of being racist, and won. Whilst his support of certain politicians and parties is perhaps hard to understand (although he's been a controversialist since the very early days of the Smiths), I'm not sure that the racist thing is accurate, given the legal outcomes.

I think the more interesting point is why we are nowadays so intolerant of people whose views don't align with our own, and as a result, how there is such a homogeneity of views within music.

Whenever I see a band expressing their political opinions, 99% of the time it's left to hard left. I don't disagree with their views (certainly, any musician is welcome to like whoever they like) , but it seems like groupthink to me, or at least less sincerely held belief than PR.
