Asheville: Police HQ Occupied in Response to Killing of Jerry Williams

I'm from asheville and want to provide a bit of background on the state of Black Asheville. This is a tourist town recently revamped and growing. People of color have largely been left out, removed, displaced from the "revitalization" of Asheville. They are treated like an eyesore that will jeopardize this once sleepy town's recent economic upturn. Policing has increased.

When Jerry was killed, our small town came together. Anarchists, reformists, jerrys friends and family have been organizing to bring attention to Jerry's killing and other issues stemming from white supremacy in Asheville. This is really the breaking of a long standing white silence in our town and that's really significant.

Police have put badge stickers on Jerry's kids, shown up at Jerry's moms house in the middle of the night claiming they heard of a robbery. White supremacists are screeching tires. People are trying to intimidate any poc organizers. In a small place like Asheville, that is significant.

The action of taking the police station was never intended to become a sit in. Folks figured they would be arrested imediately. There hasn't been a lot of attention outside Asheville for Jerry's killing and making some noise seemed to be the best to get that. Police here have played an effective or game.

Sometimes I feel like no one cares about poc unless there is a flaming cop car and a lot of adrenaline.
