A balloon apron is suspended to defend London from air attacks, 1915 [1600x1351]

Yep - for a few different reasons.

1) a lot of bombing was done at night for concealment purposes. The Germans didn’t know the RAF had a very effective radar detection system set up along the coast which often have them decent warning but night interception is tricky. If the German bomber didn’t see the netting in the dark… bad day for them.

2) The netting was more obvious in the day, so less likely to catch a distracted bomber crew. However the sight of one did force the German bomber to redirect and pick a new approach. Often this was to the benefit of ground and air defences, though not perfect naturally.

3) These net/ blimp setups could be relocated each day depending on where the RAF command thought the attacks could come from. So it was a constant obstruction and nuisance to the German bomb crews.
