The Blu-Rays use of stock footage

why would you need every season in the same aspect ratio? that makes no damn sense. this show is totally (and intentionally) inconsistent anyway. it's like saying, because Drive was shot in LA, they have to go back and re-shoot Jose Chung in LA rather than Vancouver, to be "consistent." or because Jose is a comedy, it's a flaw that Anasazi is not also a comedy, it should be turned into one. Or because Anasazi is in color, they need to color-ize all of Post Modern Prometheus. or because Post Modern Prometheus promotes rape, they should make every episode promote rape, or because Doggett is in season eight, he needs to be inserted digitally in season two, or because they used Matrix-like CGI effects in season seven, they should insert those in season one too. IT MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE. When the show was put out on DVD (completely supervised- unlike this current release- by Carter and the other writer/producers) they offered season 1-4 in 4:3 and season 5-9 in 16:9 BECAUSE THAT'S JUST HOW THEY SHOT IT. Who cares if it's "consistent." This is not even really a serialized show. Each episode is its own work of art (or piece of trash).

As for the Freaks and Geeks thing, there's no reason to "regret" that it's being made available in its original intended format. He "regrets" it because he knows many fans are ignorant about letterboxing and pillarboxing and actually believe some part of the intended image is being hidden behind the "black bars." Actually these "bars" are PREVENTING any of the original image from being chopped off or censored. You never get this kind of ignorance from people who watch movies as opposed to just TV, because a huge number of the classic films were not made in 16:9 format, many were in 4:3 and require pillarboxing on an HDTV, and many were in wider formats than 16:9 and require letterboxing even on an HDTV. Nobody who knows shit about movies advocates chopping up Casablanca or Vertigo so they fit in 16:9 shape. It would be protested as an outrageous destruction of art. Only in TV is this regarded as acceptable, only in TV do the makers actually APOLOGIZE to the fans (so ignorant are the fans) when they preserve it the way it was meant to be seen.
