‘Boyz n the Hood’ Director John Singleton Not ‘Worried’ About White Oscars: ‘There’s Only So Many Slots’

No white privilege isn't something that's written into law. But it is practiced, often subconsciously. To people who've been white their whole lives, it can be easy to deny, because it's invisible.

So my white friend's little brother has a black friend. They're in high school and one night, after hanging out at another friend's place, the two boys began walking home. Eventually they split up.

White kid gets stopped by police, police offer him a ride home because it can be dangerous at night.

Black kid gets stopped by police. They search him for weapons and drugs. Then they give him a citation for breaking curfew.

I'm Asian, and unfortunately most of my family would prefer that I date other Asians. However, an exception can be made for whites. But dating a black person, or anyone darker than me, would seem out of the question. This is just my conservative family being racist, but white people are exempted even when it's not their own race making arbitrary rules.

In addition to that, when I do date outside my race, I often come across people who simply don't date Asians, and the same happens amongst my black, latino, and Indian friends. I'm not sure if white people ever worry that they will be rejected by someone because they are white.

Here's someone else's anecdote: When presidential candidate Bernie Sanders talked about white privilege, he compared himself to Obama. Barrack Obama has often been accused of not being an American citizen (his mother is from Kansas so no matter where he was born he'd be naturalized) due to his father being a Kenyan immigrant, leading to rumors in the national media that he was born in Kenya.

Sanders noted that his father was also an immigrant, albeit from Poland. Despite that, no one has ever publicly questioned his citizenship even though he was born under the same circumstances as Obama (son of citizen and immigrant, born on US soil).

You could argue that the name 'Barrack Obama' led to suspicion, but that's just another example of white privilege.

Since we're talking about names, and movies, let's discuss actor names.

Oscar Isaac's real last name is Hernandez Estrada. If he was Oscar Hernandez, would he been considered for a role as Prince John in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood? Pretending to be white helped move his career forward, because in Hollywood your last name can be Edgerton and you'll be asked to play an Egyptian.

...

These aren't the only examples of white privilege, and I wouldn't consider them the best. There's examples more extreme and more subtle, but it's not like affirmative action.
