I read the book so many times in the end of the 70s, I lost count. Strugatskie were The Sci-Fi Writers of that generation. The book has very little to do with the movie in terms of ideological message. First of all, it's much more action-like, there is much more for the sci-fi geekdom than it is there in the movie.

Stalker in the book is the typical Americanized action hero (did they tell you how heavily Russian culture is influenced by the West, 200, 100 years ago or now) , that is ready to sacrifice others to achieve his personal goal, driven by the material gain and the welfare of his family. Only in the end he is exclaiming

Я животное, ты же видишь, я животное. У меня нет слов, меня не научили словам, я не умею думать, эти гады не дали мне научиться думать. Но если ты на самом деле такой... всемогущий, всесильный, всепонимающий... разберись! Загляни в мою душу, я знаю, там есть все, что тебе надо. Должно быть. Душу-то ведь я никогда и никому не продавал! Она моя, человеческая! Вытяни из меня сам, чего же я хочу, - ведь не может же быть, чтобы я хотел плохого!.. Будь оно все проклято, ведь я ничего не могу придумать, кроме этих его слов: "СЧАСТЬЕ ДЛЯ ВСЕХ, ДАРОМ, И ПУСТЬ НИКТО НЕ УЙДЕТ ОБИЖЕННЫЙ!"

that reveals that he is actually in the very beginning of his spiritual journey to God. His exclamation is akin to the exclamation of the atheist in a desperate situation calling habitually, culturally to a deity.
