Can someone explain to me why antisemitism is even a thing?

This is not true in England. Jews were offered a chance to leave the banking profession and were given farmland to work just like any Englishman. They refused, and instead obeyed Edward's order to leave.

What you say is true about some cases in Eastern Europe, but, by and large, Jews had developed a merchant and banking culture and were comfortable to try and stay within it. They positioned there because it was lucrative which makes sense, but then they also became a sensible and convenient scapegoat. A trade-off I guess.

History is not, however, an endless series of Jews being screwed over. Far from it. This is the Jewish equivalent of church apologetics.
