Chappie: The /r/movies most divisive movie of 2015 so far

I'm in the camp of "I like it". Spoilers ahead, be warned.

And in regards to your points:

1 - originality is not a prerequisite for a movie being good. The Matrix is a knock off of Ghost in the Shell, the Indiana Jones movies (the ones that count) are a rehash of old pulp novels. Thats how it is man. Lots of great movies are as original as my attempts at poetry.

2 - See, I see your point about following rules. BUT, in this case I think it's alright. Let me tell you why, one of the reasons I hated Lucy (the movie) was because as soon as she hit the max level cap, I stopped caring for her. She was emotionless, invincible and had the charm of a wet sponge. But thats exactly how I expect a ... "being" so much superior to humans to be. You stop caring for them. Look at Robocop or the Terminator - we like them because they still have human elements to them. If Chappie went full post-human, the movie would have lost so, so much... the thing is, I dont mind when a movie has these odd lapses in logic so that a better experience can be created. Like how Bruce Banner showed up at the end of Avengers, I dont care how he knew where to go or how he came so fast; I just wanna see him fight.

I just wanna see Chappie being charming, know what I mean?

3 - The characters... they're all varied. The only who was genuinely supposed to be likeable was Yolandi and even I thought she was annoying at first. And Deon, look at when he comes home and does his computer log thing. He'd been working on the pure AI project for nigh 3 years and the dude was crying when he succeeded! Course he isnt thinking straight when it comes to his passion project. But hey, I'm not here to defend stupid things - and the fact that he was in a cubicle farm was pretty stupid. So was Jackmans gun move.

But Jackman still had some depth - the movie specifically mentions his religious background and how he sees pure AI as an absolute abomination towards God. He's opposed to Deon not just because of work reasons but because he opposes the very concept of what Deon is creating.

And for all that bitching about Die Antwood, I'd never heard of them before I came to these Chappie threads. I dont give a fuck about who they are - I just know that they had fun to watch.

4 - YES! More robots please.

Overall, I think it's an adequate movie. I liked it. I've seen all the movies you recommend OP (and I like those too) but I also like Chappie. I wont turn my nose up at it, it was a fun movie.
