Cocaine use causes ‘profound changes’ in the brain that leads to an increased risk of relapse due to stress

I dated smokers for a few years, never smoked. Grew up with my mom being a chain smoker. I guess I originally started with being drunk and having friends offer me cigs. (Idk, everyone being drunk, being around smokers, they go out for smoke and you're drunk so you're like sure.)

I started non-drinking smoking when I was going through a really really rough time and I wasn't on medication for my mental health issues. It calmed me down and stopped the crying. Kept it at 0-2 cigs a day for a long time. (Was dependent usually on my stress level.) It got a little worse for a while when I was once again dating a chain smoker and all my friends/roommates were chain smokers. :| I've heard of similar happen with people working in service industries where "smoke breaks" are common..

Also particularly when I was using cigarettes to deal with the stress of driving in Orlando. Driving in general has always really stressed me out so smoking cigarettes was how I helped deal with freak outs from that.. luckily I didn't have to drive anywhere very often but it was usually like okay I'm driving so I'll probably have at least one cigarette during that.. Then it didn't help when I was on an instant release type of medication that sometimes made me feel really edgy..

Overall, while I've never smoked heavily, I definitely see it as being a common self-medication issue. Small time increase in smoking was usually related to situations/people I was around and I noticed it didn't actually feel "helpful" during that time so when I was alone and things were fine, I didn't feel the need to smoke. The ritual habit can also be somewhat appealing sometimes.. Stepping outside/away from things for a few minutes and just relax.

Nicotine helps me focus while I work so I still enjoy the use of ecigs nicotine and caffeine while I'm working. But I noticed just nicotine never helped with the self-medication uses involving stress or being upset.. To me a craving for nicotine and a craving for a cigarette were definitely two different things entirely. :/ I have also been on/off all kinds of medications since I was a little kid and had experienced all kind of terrible physical withdrawals and things from times I've had to cold-turkey certain medications I shouldn't have and so on so I wonder if that's helped me deal with any physical withdrawal..

As for the subject of Cocaine, I tried it before and didn't get very much from it. (a lot of drugs in general seem to often effect me differently I should add and I have no idea why. Except alcohol but apparently that works in a different part of the brain iirc?) I did it with a group of people and I was mostly just chill on the couch and felt kind of tired. They were like "wtf. here do another line." and yeah, not much difference. Lol. I figure at least I don't have to worry about ever being a coke-abuser. :P
