Conservatives ignoring "near universal" calls for "meaningful" C-51 oversight | Press Progress

All you do is defend the Liberals and imply that every criticism of them is part of some conspiracy. Sorry but the Liberal position on this bill is shit compared to the NDP and looks far more like Harper's version:

  • The NDP would delete the provisions regarding dissent/protest; the Liberals would amend it to include only protests that are associated with already-defined (not protest) security threats. The existing language exempts only "lawful" protest activity, which leaves obvious loopholes.

  • The NDP would remove C-51 provisions on preventative detention; the Liberals would leave C-51 provisions intact.

  • The NDP would eliminate C-51 provisions on disruption; the Liberals would require a warrant when the activity "might" (instead of "would") infringe Canadian law and would not permit the warrant to authorize Charter breaches.

  • The NDP would create a "community outreach and de-radicalization coordinator", the Liberal amendments do not mention such a position.

  • The NDP would limit information sharing to only matters of terrorism; the Liberals would leave intact broader information sharing powers but eliminate the ability for a recipient to further disclose the material "to anyone, for any purpose."

  • The NDP would restrict the ability to add people to the no-fly list and would provide some unspecified (in the press release) improved avenue of appeal; the liberals would only invert the burden of action of the Minister on appeals.

The biggest difference between Trudeau and Harper is oversight and we've already covered why oversight is not a good solution, so that leaves Trudeau and Harper on one side and the NDP on the other.
