Considering switching from Xbox One to PS4

I would highly recommend getting the pro over the original PS4. If you don't have a mid-tier PC, the $100 upgrade for a better GPU is definitely worth it for a lot of games.

Sony's practically won this round of console wars with a 2:1 sale ratio of PS4 to Xbone, and at the heart of that is exclusives. As much as other PCMRs love to berate exclusives, I personally feel like they are a necessary evil in the current market. People say it's easy to "just build your own PC, a 5 year old can do it!", but in reality many people are simply dumb, or are not interested in doing the research to construct a $1000 lego set that can easily break. Hell, if you asked me to install an audio system into your car, I'd know fuck all about cars or speaker manufacturers. Consoles appeal to the gamers who doesn't want to deal with bullshit and just want to buy a game and pop into their system and play it.

But back to exclusives. If you do decide to get a PS4, these are some games you should consider checking out, in descending order of preference:

Persona 5: The best J-RPG I've ever played that will be the golden standard for all J-RPGs in the future just like The Witcher 3 did for western RPGs. This game is very story driven, but constantly reminds you to "take your time" as it slowly trickles the story in drops. The loading screens can take its damn time though, and SAVE SAVE SAVE whenever you're in a dungeon.

Horizon: Zero Dawn: Far Cry meets Tomb Raider. Very story driven, breathtaking landscapes, very smooth combat. The story is generic, but it's really the world-building that makes the game great. I felt little need to play the game after the main quest was done though. Overall felt like a giant tech demo for the next Horizon game similar to Witcher 2 being the stepping stone for Witcher 3.

Yakuza 0: A mafia crime drama beat-en-up that plays in chapters where you play between 2 characters in an enclosed city. You don't have nearly as much freedom as a GTA game, but it has other charms. A VERY Japanocentric game that takes place in the 80s at the height of the Japanese economic boom. The game has a ridiculous amount of side distractions like karaoke, mahjong, shogi, 80s arcade games, and many more. The side quests are also over the top and funny and ultimately memorable. A niche game, but if you love Japanese culture definitely check it out.

Uncharted 4 & 1-3: Great storytelling and animations (something something Andromeda), terrible gameplay. Some would say to just watch a 3h movie of each game's cutscenes if you don't want to grind through the first 3 games to get caught up with the story, but I would still recommend playing through them; skip the first one for sure though unless you're dedicated. Uncharted 4, however, is a mile ahead of the precious titles. It also does a great job at filling you in if it's your first time stepping into the series through its visual storytelling. On top of that, it has a perfect ending to the franchise that doesn't try to get with a bang, but to simply walk away in a classy fashion.

Bloodborne: "The Dark Souls of PS4, oh wait" these type of games is a hit or miss, but if you enjoyed dark souls, definitely check this one out.

Ratcher and Clank: While the movie flopped big time, the game was decent. A remake of the original, the cartoonish artstyle makes full utilization of the PS4 hardware. Combat was okay, and the game was ultimately forgettable, but it's a great 6-10h gaming experience.

Until Dawn: A slightly more advanced telltale with much better graphics.

I didn't mention Last of Us Remastered or Journey because they're technically not PS4 exclusives, but if like me you somehow avoided the games until now, it's definitely worth checking out. I also didn't mention Crash because I've not touched it yet.

Other games like NieR: Automata, MGS5, or the upcoming Ni no Kuni 2 I didn't mention either because they're available on PC. However, if you don't have a decent PC setup, those 3 are definitely worth checking out.

Some of these games might not be for you. As much as people love to suck on ̶C̶D̶ ̶P̶r̶o̶j̶e̶k̶t̶ ̶R̶e̶d̶ Naughty Dog's dicks, the terrible gameplay of the Uncharted series or the Last of Us was terrible enough that I would never touch them again, which is further exacerbated by the fact they're practically interactive movies, and the experience can really only be enjoyed fresh the first time.

Some online games, like Rocket League or Minecraft, don't have cross-platform multiplayer. You'll only be able to play with other PS4 users for those games. The PS4's UI in general is a clusterfuck, just do all your shopping via browser.

Regardless, now's a great time to jump into PS4. With the price hike of PC parts, and the newly released Switch still trying to gather up a sizable library of 1st party games, I would say if you're a casual gamer, definitely get a PS4 Pro.
