“We’d Rather Concentrate Everything on the Story,” Says Dragon Quest 11 Writer on Why the Game Isn’t Open World

Open world hurts the story development a lot usually and comes with a lot of flaws. Look at how much BotWs narrative and story (or lack thereof) was moulded by the open world gameplay as well as the ease of most dungeons due to being able to be attempted in any order you wanted.

I think people are confused.. open world does not mean big world to explore. Witcher 3 is an amazing game with an a great story and world. It carries almost no side effect of an open world game. That's because, believe it or not, it isn't one. The story is progressed linearly as are the gameplay mechanics. You can't just go anywhere you want as well. The game drops you off at white orchard and only after you beat that segment can you move on to novigrad, after beating the latter you move on to skellige and so on. You still have a big world (or several) to explore at your own pace but you are still confined by linear progression which is beneficial to the game as a whole.

Again, a big world to explore does NOT mean open world game. The two are not mutually exclusive. People who want every single game ever to be open world for no reason need to think about this.
