Daily Discussion Thread - April 06, 2017

So at the end of December, all of my Netspend accounts (I have a handful) got shut down. There was no warning, not even an email or letter stating that the accounts had closed. I went to login to change my address and discovered I couldn't log in.

I called customer service and they couldn't tell me why the accounts were closed but told me I'd get a letter in the mail. I waited several weeks, nothing arrived, I called again. Was told for sure they'd send them out now.

Long and short of it is, I still haven't received several thousand dollars from them. Now I've got their corporate people involved but they want me to send it proof of address, ID, and SSN. Which sounds reasonable to some degree, but I don't understand why they can't just send a check to the address on file. They claim to treat customer information with utmost security but asking me to email them my SSN is definitely not secure. And I don't want to use an online fax service for this either.

Is there any recourse I have without sending this sensitive information to a company that at this point, I completely don't trust? How can I make them release money that they've been holding for months now? Or do I just have to suck it up and do what they want no matter what?

I am extremely uncomfortable with this situation, especially the fact that there was absolutely no communication from the company about the status of my accounts. It was only when I went to login that I discovered they were closed. I know that each account had approximately $1k in it (max of the savings account) but other than that I have no access to the statements or to see the exact amounts.

What a terrible, terrible company. Any advice?
