Dear Reddit, I'm 18 years old and I have my whole life ahead of me. What are some decisions/tips/advice you wish you would've known at my age?

Just because you can do anything you want in college doesn't mean you should.

Go to class. I don't care how early or late the classes are, go to every session. Also, make sure you show up early to the sessions. You'll be ready to start class faster, and sometimes the instructor shows up early too, and you can have an ideal opportunity to ask them questions.

Take notes. I don't care how boring the material and/or instructor are, pay attention and write down useful notes. And I mean actually write them down. Don't bring a laptop/tablet to write notes down on, you'll just get distracted and browse reddit.

Do the god damn homework. College classes don't have a lot of assignments, so homework generally counts for significantly more of your grade than it did in high school. Also, do the homework as soon as humanly possible. The information will be fresher in your mind, so it'll be easier to finish, and take you less time in the long run.

If you're ever struggling with the material, TALK TO THE INSTRUCTOR. Your instructor is likely to be either a Grad Student who knows a lot about the subject and is very passionate about it, and would be more than happy to talk with you about it, or a professor who's spent decades studying and likely teaching it, and is probably the best person to ask.

Don't be afraid to drop classes. Most colleges will have a one or two week grace period where if you drop a class, not only will it not adversely affect your grade, you'll be refund most, if not all, of the money you spent on it. Even after that, up to about half-way through the semester you'll be able to drop a class with little consequence. If you're struggling with a class, or just don't find it useful or interesting and it's not required for your degree, just drop it.

I would strongly recommend joining at least one club. This was one of the few things I did right when I went to college, and I didn't even do it until I was half-way through. I met some of my best friends there, and had tons of fun. It's a great way to help balance your course work, and sometimes complement it too if you find an interesting club related to your major.

I would avoid campus living if you can. The facilities are usually poor quality, and it's not really that great of an environment for learning. The majority of the floor will be freshmen, and freshmen are irresponsible and disinterested in school, so they can and will find any excuse to not study and be loud and boisterous. This is fine every once in a while, but constant partying/goofing off is not good for your grades, nor your health, so I'd get out of there as soon as possible. The other living options available to you will be more expensive, but they're worth the cost.
