Deep sea fishermen, ocean freighter workers, naval personel etc: What is the strangest/creepiest thing you have seen out on the job?

So, I am from Richmond, VA. I was out on a boat in the Chesapeake Bay roughly 11 years ago, when I was 17. This was my first time on an inshore fishing trip. We rented a boat for the day, that started off all sun - bluebird day.

About 4 pm, we were all fishing and having a grand ol' time in the bay. We were catching fish 2 at a time (literally, but i don't recall the type of fish - I think it was Striped Bass). We were so into it, that about 1 hour later (now 5 pm), we all looked up and noticed that all of the other boats that were around us (there were roughly 5-10 a half mile vicinity) were gone, and no where to be seen.

The clouds were the darkest shade of grey, and rolling towards us faster than it would seem we could motor in the other direction. within about 30 minutes, we could see land, but by this time the waves were 5-6 feet high, and really starting to toss the boat around in the 30 mph winds, and heavy rain.

This situation gets worse in two ways;

1) A loud beeping sirens starts to go off, and we immediately begin to see smoke come from down below deck (engine room I can only imagine). He tells us that the engine is overheating and that he is making a call for help to shore.

2) Among all of this, as in the story above, the waves were getting progressively higher while this storm was done approaching, and sitting overhead of us. I saw a scaly creature breach the surface of the water about 25 yards from the boat. It popped up facing the opposite direction and made an abrupt 180 degree turn to face our boat (and this seemed to happen once my eyes made contact with the back of its head...strange). Also like in the story above, it seemed to have arms like human man. This whole instance took place over the course of about 25 seconds. This figure then dipped back under the surface of the Bay, and I was not to see it again.

This is the first time I have mentioned this to anyone since it happened..No one else on my boat saw it, and I sure as hell didn't want my family thinking I was crazy on my first boat outing like this.

I am sure some of you may call bullshit, but believe you me...it is not.
