A dense sludge of crude oil has been devastating Brazil’s beaches for at least three months, and its origin remains unknown by authorities and experts.

In state of Bahia here. There was a dolphin, but nobody confirmed if it was due to the oil. We also found a couple of dead sea turtles. There were a few days when it was really bad. The smell alone was unbearable. Now each day seems better than the one before. On my run yesterday I saw maybe a dozen oil stains, most of which were by the mangrove. Today haven’t seen any and walked about 4K barefoot with no stains on the foot. The navy were here cleaning up for a few weeks and the community really came together to collect the oil as it was washing up. Fishermen never stopped fishing, but most people halted or reduced their seafood consumption.
