In theory, conservatives are fighting to stay as close to the constitution as possible in order to limit government overreach and stay as close to “these are the basic rules that we couldn’t live without - everything else, the public can work out themselves without government being responsible”.

As a contrast, liberals are interested in expanding those responsibilities to cover areas where “the public” would fail at providing - promoting a system closer to equal but with significant manufactured government interference.

The ideal system is the combination of both, with each ideology keeping the other from going to the extremes. Conservatism is lost right now, and Republicans aren’t conservatives. Conservatives are now democrats. The Republican Party is some broken nonsense that represents nothing besides - well, you see.
