Directors who don‘t look like you expected

Depiction doesn’t equal endorsement. To say he endorses those couples in those films couldn’t be more wrong. And I don’t know of any evidence that he’s a misogynist off screen.

Sure if you’re a writer with a moral compass. Which Anderson isn’t.

Again, if you’re going to make these accusations, evidence is needed. Even with evidence, I don’t feel his movies endorse these views. Death of the author and all that. He may or may not be a misogynist, but I do not feel his movies are.

Much of his work is about toxic men and how they affect the world around them. His work for the most part is very much a critique and study on toxic masculinity. This also means he’s interested in also writing about the kinds of women who would be with them. This creates fascinating and very well realized women in his film like Amy Adam’s character in the Master, Vicky Krieps’ character in Phantom Thread. And to say Anderson isn’t empathetic and even favorable to Kriep’s character is to say you didn’t watch the film imo.

But there’s also characters like Amber and Claudia for instance are well fleshed out and are explored through more than just their relationship with a male character in their films.

So despite this large focus on toxic masculinity, there’s plenty of female character that are treated as more than their relationships with men and are complexly written as they should be.
