[discussion] A dog isnt always “too skinny” because YOU think it is.

While I understand it is easy for dogs to become obese. Sometimes it isnt the owners fault. My dog was fat since she turned one. I went to the vet, they said I was over feeding her. I cut back her food. She didn't lose weight. Went to the vet again, still said I was feeding her too much. Cut back more. Still didn't lose weight. She actually gained weight. The cycle went on and on. I was exercising her too throughout all of this. One vet told me to switch food 3 times. Another put her on Metamucil. Nothing worked. My first vet said if she doesn't lose weight, it might be thyroid and he would test her. However, he left before I took her in again and the next vet didn't listen to me. So I started looking at thyroid issues in dogs and researching it. Asked for 2 years for a vet to check her vitals and all swear I was just over feeding her even though Goldens are notorious for thyroid issues. She is 3 and a half now and in August a vet finally listened to me after I was feeding her next to nothing and the vet was worried. Guess what? Thyroid levels were wack. She is on meds now and finally losing weight. But during that time that I was struggling and asking every vet to check her levels, everyone and their mom told me she was fat. I had a neighbor in my apartment complex, complete stranger, hound me for a week about how over weight she was. I understand that a lot of the time, it is people over feeding their dogs. But make sure to remember it might not be true and no one is helping them.
