Is Geopolitics a legit field of study?

Although I've always kept up with the politics of the world, it's only recently that I've stumbled upon geopolitics. I read through sites like thediplomat.com, foreignpolicy.com, and browse r/geopolitics.

However, I'm skeptical. Most the articles and the comments are laden with speculation, assumption and stereotype without much data to back it up. I've search around the web and reddit to find a suitable venue to ask this, this is the best sub that I can think of. I've tried various other sub but nobody reply so i'll try my luck here. Any thoughts are welcome.
