Drug overdoses are driving up the death rate of young white adults in the United States to levels not seen since the end of the AIDS epidemic more than two decades ago.

I wouldn't be opposed to overdosing on a euphoric drug either if I were approaching the middle of my life, was educated, and had a strong work ethic; but couldn't find gainful employment.

Hell I think about it all the time. People like to claim people of my age group are lazy; but my professional skill set is about as diverse as they come. I've been a professional mechanic, photographer, construction worker, and writer; and yet none of that experience grants me any access to a decent job.

I recently worked for a well known shipping company where I had the same responsibilities as a well paid driver, but was also tasked with sorting my own packages, and occasionally training new hires. Three jobs that are usually distinct and separate in this company. I did them all, in the hopes I might get the permanent position my supervisor told me aid be eligible for. My supervisors, as well as the head of the distribution center were blown away by how effective I was. I was able to meet or exceed the number of deliveries per hour the companies drivers routinely did in full sized trucks.

But despite working extra shifts, and tons of extra hours; despite going above and beyond what I was asked to do, and keeping my mouth shut, it turned out I was expendable. And all of my paychecks had all of my reported hours inaccurately modified to ensure I didn't accidentally become a full time employee worthy of over time. My very first paycheck had an hour of wage theft. The company essentially didn't count the hours I spent each morning sorting packages.

So by all means. Do some heroin, and kill yourself if you want to. I won't judge or blame you. In this economy you aren't worth shit to anyone even if you work hard. You're an easily discarded human wrench, whose only value only depends on your ability to cater to the needs of employers who discard you like the human tool you are, the instant you no longer provide any short term financial utility to the company who writes your checks.

Don't feel bad if you've worked hard and can't get ahead. Don't feel bad if you want to take your own life. Remember that the people who love you will probably never forgive you for such a decision, and help is available if you want it. But if you've worked hard in America, and can't make it count for shit, it's not your fault. And if you want to leave on your own terms the rest of us won't hold it against you.
