Every hook has its pros and cons. Plastic are very cheap, but build up static and break. Aluminum are cheap, and durable, but make your hands cramp after a while. Bamboo are more expensive usually, but they are light and durable, but I feel like they snag in my yarn. My set is cheap though and a higher quality set may work better. Glass I imagine will be breakable, expensive, and possibly heavy. Wood hooks are usually very expensive and can break and have varying quality control (depends on the company/craftsman) , they are also usually stunningly beautiful. There are also various companies that make combinations of these materials. Addi swings are "ergonomic" plastic handles with metal heads. I personally loathed them, but others swear by them. They are also expensive. Hobby lobby has bamboo handled aluminum ones. Again I didn't care for these: the handle was bigger but not really comfortable as bamboo isn't known for its softness. Other than glass I have all of these types of hook, and have tried them all repeatedly. My suggestion is to consider Clover Amour hooks. I honestly don't know a single person who didn't try them and love them. They are aluminum in a rubber coating. They are comfortable in your hands. They are also polished in some way that makes them slip through the yarn amazingly. They are durable, and so far I have had no issues with the handle getting dirty or gummy or anything. You can get them individually at Joann, but I recommend buying them as a set. With a coupon you can get the B-K set for about $30 at Joann or regularly on Amazon. They probably aren't perfect for everyone, but with all the option they are by far my favorite. I know there are cheaper knock offs on amazon, but I have heard that they are good travel spares, but not as good. If you are hesitant to get the set I would buy just one and try it out. Joann has a 50% off coupon this weekend.
