Simple Questions Thread

Hey out there!

I've never done any crochet before and I've found a pattern I'd really like to give a go. I couldn't get their recommended yarn, but I found the heartland in red, which has a 98% match according to yarnsub. I've got an aluminum crochet set where I'm using the 5mm (H) as recommended by the pattern.

Where should I start as an absolute beginner? I figured I could just find beginner video's for all the kinds of crochet, practice them, then give them a go following the actual pattern. And I'd like to make a gauge swatch too - I'd probably start with this.

  1. The pattern recommends "About 3.5 DC and 1.5 rounds per inch with larger hook" - so I assume I'd need to do a double crochet gauge swatch, any recommended beginner video's I could follow that would take me through that, or build me up to it?

  2. The patterns first round is "Ch 3, 11 DC into a magic circle. Cinch circle shut. Slst into top of beginning (beg) ch-3. (12)" - is there an easy to follow video that would take me through doing something like this too?

  3. I've practiced a little bit just doing a chain and I seem to have issues with the yarn splitting, I'm trying to take it slow and ensure the yarn is entirely under the hook, not getting caught, but it still seems to split a bit, is there anything I can do that might help?

I also suspect starting with the ears might be a little easier, but I haven't gotten a white yarn yet.
