Eskimo: "If I did not know about God and sin, would I go to hell?" Priest: "No, not if you did not know." Eskimo: "Then why did you tell me?” ― Annie Dillard

I entirely agree. I was an atheist, but I was drawn towards Catholicism. The God of the OT was not comparable to Jesus. Sure, Jesus said a few harsh things but even never conducted genocide. Scholars like Peter Enns right great introductory books that explores the idea that God didn't instruct them to. Israel thought he did because they thought He was a warrior god in a time of extreme tribal identification.

The standard Christian conception of God, in my opinion, is wrong. If they are right, God is evil. That simple.

Biblical interpretations can be refuted and backed up. Sure, it wont be as exact as a mathematical proof, but it's the best we can do. Even then, I can get the frustration. I have no idea what to do with it all anymore. At first, Catholicism seemed so completely right, but then the questioning led me to think it is wrong. Now, I can go back to atheism or stick with some odd non-denominational Christian who doesn't hold the Bible inerrant and thinks purgatorial universalism is right. For now, I'll be the latter.
