As someone who has the budget to play around with I'll tell you why I choose not to with base products: 9/10 it ends up being a waste for the environment even if I don't feel like it is a waste of my money.

Even if you are lucky to find another perfect color match if the formula doesn't perform as well as your HG it will be disappointing and if it does, it's anti-climactic because it is functionally the same as your HG.

The only exception to this I make is if I have some kind of special event coming up and my HG won't work for it for some reason or another. Maybe I need more coverage, a different finish, etc... but if it isn't something you really need "playing around" with a different finish is almost immediately boring. Plus you can usually get that desire out of your system by applying some powder/moistorizer and creating whatever finish you're interested in.
