It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Dont disqualify 99% of activists' positive efforts because they still own a phone. Labelling people 'hypocrites' for giving anything but 100% is how you get 0%, so you're honestly doing more harm than good.

Think, when people are faced with an opportunity to do good, do you want them to do good knowing that it counts for something, or do you want them to think about it, remember that u/jimthetrimm says it won't count since they own an iphone, and then not do it because why bother if it doesn't count? You want them to make a step in the right direction.

Those environmental activists - "hypocrites" - are probably doing enough good with their phones to balance out the harm done to the environment by the phones' production. They're learning, organizing, contributing, sharing, etc. You, on the other hand, are using your phone to discourage people from making such efforts. I think you ceasing to make these sorts of comments may do more overall good for the environment than you moving to a ranch. Consider that.
