Guns on Parliament Hill

Comparing the Dawson College and the Polytechnique school shootings is very misleading.

  • First he is mistaken in saying that the cop who took down the Dawson shooter was a Surete du Quebec cop... He was a Montreal municipal cop. The difference is very important.

  • Second, Dawson College is DOWNTOWN, sitting on top of the Atwater Metro station, just across the street from a major shopping center... I mean that the distance from the door of the shopping center to the door of the school is less than 50 feet. Polytechnique in on the top of a mountain, Mount Royal, just about 1250 feet from the nearest boulevard and Metro station. Completely different environments.

  • Third, the Montreal cops saw the Dawson shooter in the street as he was entering the school. Their response time was instant because THEY WERE ALREADY ON THE SCENE.

  • Fourth, the cops shot the Dawson shooter with their service weapon (Glock), not a shotgun, not a rifle, not a sub-machine gun.

  • Fifth, the Polytechnique shooting happened in a time when NOBODY HAD A CELLPHONE. So calling the cops required finding a phone and public phones are close to the entrance, not close to a classroom on the 4th floor.

  • Lastly, in the 90's, when the Pollytechnique shooting happened, the cops used an outdated but still official policy of circling the building and sealing all exits. Since Polytechnique, the cops updated the technique to running in with guns drawned and clearing the building room by room like soldiers do in urban warfare.

Comparing the 2 shootings and concluding that guns saved the day at Dawson is a LIE because the 2 shootings are not only very different but the element of incredible luck contributed in the quick resolution of the Dawson attack.
