Someone said something earlier about mask efficacy being like 50% and I contradicted them. A little while later I saw this headline ( nytimes.com/article/covid-masks-protection-stats.html ) and I haven't read the whole article yet but from what I can tell, this 54% efficacy figure is for preventing the person wearing the surgical mask from becoming infected, specifically.
I think I was wrong and I should have asked for more information before dismissing your claim, dear redditor.

I wish I could find the comment and the u/ name but mobile is overwhelmed and so all the lower level comments are inaccessible to me.
Anyway, even though masks are most effective at protecting others, 54% protection for the mask wearer is still pretty good, even if it's not great. I will stay off planes and stick with my N95!
