I hope someone with direct contact and experience with the local VA will comment, but to at least offer something to start with, I can say that the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville has often placed among the very top among VA hospitals, both in terms of patient satisfaction, and operationally, as evaluated by the Dept of VA.

Some examples of local news coverage of this, both recent and over the past 5+ years: https://mountainx.com/blogwire/charles-george-va-medical-center-rated-among-the-best-at-state-regional-and-national-levels/ https://wlos.com/news/local/after-recent-rating-charles-george-va-medical-center-ranks-second-in-us https://www.citizen-times.com/story/news/local/2015/04/30/charles-george-va-medical-center-scores-tops-nation/26652943/

Close friends who are vets and who both receive care there, and volunteer there, have frequently commented on their satisfaction with their care and with the wide range of activities the VA is engaged in locally, far beyond running the medical center. Food programs, active outreach to homeless vets, addiction treatment, etc.

The criticisms I've read or heard seem like the obvious ones (which is not to say they are not valid - just commonly expressed), and relate to their efforts being spread thin, lacking personnel, resultant delays in treatment, falling through the cracks, etc. The main facility is also 5 miles outside of downtown - which in most urban areas may seem right around the corner, but here seems more remote for some, especially if they have transportation issues.
