Help with career plan (contemplating medical school)?

Friends in medicine (surgical, gps) steered me clear of the field citing high workload, stress, lack of work life balance and time with family (I’m in another area which required the same length of training, stress, etc). In the gps case they said it was some of the least fulfilling work they’d done, one struggled with depression. Notably, where we are gps make significantly more bank and the training is less than for most specialty positions. For many, the workload and paperwork were barriers to caring. Medicine is also up there in terms of stress burnout and negative mental health outcomes along with law—which is also quite bad. You shouldn’t feel all bad for them, because the md brings a great deal of respect and power. The money is very good. But it sounds as though there would be a clash in terms of your values. Not to steer you too clear—I’d recommend connecting with doctors in your area. Plenty of work involves stress, long hours and years of prior study but doesn’t have near the same payoff in cash and kudos terms.
