Hi reddit, I am 26 and I am recovering from open heart surgery. AMA!

Sorry for the rant!!

Fortunately it seems as though I will be alright! Just dealing with medical bills for years to come...

American health insurance is dumb. I signed up for my employer's health insurance(like many americans do) and they garnish my wages of $179.00 per month. My insurance isn't too bad and covers alot but after a major surgery like this it is quite expensive due to things like the deductible and out-of-pocket maximum.

Some things are completely covered by insurance, some partially, and some not all. You don't really find out until bills and claims start showing up and this stuff all depends on if your doctors are in-network provider which is difficult to do when your at a hospital with ten different doctors working on you.

My deductible is $2600 which means I have to hit that amount before my insurance kicks in. After $2600, my insurance will cover 80% of the costs. I am left to cover the 20% until the out-of-pocket max is reached, then insurance will start to cover things. This is only for in-network stuff. If you use out-of-network providers, which is easy when you're at the hospital, there are out-of-network deductibles and maximums.

Its a big scam. Its all just business too, nobody actually cares if you get better, they just want all your money. I will likely owe about $20,000 for all of this which is better than $100,000...(<guessing) if uninsured.

Another big scam my employer is pulling is that since I am a relatively new hire, they don't need to offer me short-term disability pay since I am currently unable to work. But, thanks to the FMLA, employer can't fire me until august so I can keep my health insurance! So generous! So i send them a check for $179.00 each month.

Health insurance here is retarded. Sorry for the rant ha.
