High schoolers of Reddit, what cliques exist now? Is it still nerds/jocks/stoners, or are there new groups that the older redditors don’t know about?

Disclaimer: I went to a relatively small HS in New York City, so my experience could be considered very different from let's say a magnet HS or a suburban one. I graduated in June of '17, so my experience I think is still relevant. The main difference, which many Redditors have pointed out, is the lack of distinct cliques that everyone belonged to; it's no longer cool to be just the jock or just the nerd. There were a lot of inter-lapping amongst the groups mentioned below.

The top of the social pyramid (which in reality, resembled more of a square diamond) were the social butterflies. There were a few of them and hard to become. These were the kind of girls or guys who had the trifecta of the most desirable traits in high school. To qualify, they had to possess a strong social life, decent at academics and were dedicated to their sport/hobby. Honestly, this group ought to be renamed, the "people with the best time management skills". They always managed to be nice to everyone, show up on Monday morning with their project done, ready to receive an A and be at a (insert a cool event or party) on a Saturday night, having the time of their lives.

Below them were the 'lit kids', nerds and jocks. I placed them all on the same playing field, not because of their popularity but rather, due to their relevance. The 'lit kids' were always the kids who—for the most part—managed somehow to scrape by academically, had money to burn and were heavy into drug culture, specifically weed. Some of them overlapped with those involved in skate culture, others into rap culture or in maintaining a tumblr-esque aesthetic and the rest belonged in a version of 'nepotism is my strongest trait' group.

Nerds was a very loose term in my school because there were many types of nerds, those into anime, standard academic focused ones, those solely into the pursuit of their hobby and geeks. Finally, the last group that existed alongside the 'lit kids' and nerds were the jocks. My HS was, mind you, in the middle of Manhattan so athletics weren't really a large part of the school's culture so naturally you were considered a jock if you participated in a team sport for at least two seasons and it didn't have to be a school-managed sports program. Lots of people partook in them because they already had friends who did them. Within the athletes, there were additional groups such as, people who had their lives sorted out (aka had a steady job), party athletes and the athletic nerds.

Those below them belonged to a mishmash of groups, all too small to have a strong presence at the school but they all had very defined friend groups. Some of them included the 'make-up girls', come rain or shine you could count on them on having a full face of makeup on and the tight-knit community of thespians/backstage crew people. Those on the bottom of my HS's social ladder were the kids who people forgot about. These were a distinct few, as you really had to try to not make friends in my HS. They were the type of kids, who when you worked on school projects with and had off-topic conversations, didn't bother to comment.
