Highest Rated Manga Across 3 Major Databases

Berserk. It has some of the best artwork you can find and it’s bloody great as action and dark fantasy. It is definitely not as good anymore, since they are now fighting demons and not people, plus everything has degraded to a simple revenge story. Being the highest rated is too much, but it still deserve a spot in the tops.

FMA. As I already said in the top anime, it is the best shonen in existence and although it doesn’t exactly deserve to be that high, it is undoubtedly top material.

I might as well mention 20th Century Boys and Monster at the same time, since they are made by the same guy and have a very similar feeling to them. They are amongst the most mature and well executed psychological thrillers in manga format, easily deserving a spot in the tops.

Oyasumi Punpun. Just like the other two, it is also great in terms of phychological impact but it’s not a thriller. It is a minimalistic, depressing, full of allegories slice of life. Not my cup of tea but I accept that it does what it aims to do splendidly, thus it also deserves its spot.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Way longer and way more detailed than the movie, but equally amazing in terms of detailed artstyle and creepy atmosphere. A bit ham-fisted with its pro-ecology and anti-war themes but undeniably a great piece of fiction made by Miyazaki himself. It deserves its spot.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 7. I have no idea why this particular part is so high rated, I assume it’s because it was ongoing when the anime began. I didn’t read it and the artstyle became too gay for my tastes, but since it’s Jojo, it has to be good and it deserves its spot. Totally not biased.

Great Teacher Onizuka. I am not into school comedies but this title is a worthy exception, as it had a decent amount of social commentary spread across a lot of silly moments. It deserves its spot.

Yotsubato. Aimless slice of life comedy about a little girl. Do I need to mention how ridiculously overrated this is? Fuck it, most liked it because the lead is a loli.

Death Note. Another phychological thriller with very good mind games to the most part. It falls apart after the time skip, as all stories do after a timeskip, but it’s otherwise a worthy read, and deserves its spot.

Mushishi. As I stated many times, there is no plot and everything happens because of mushi, making it a storyless slice of life with some magic thrown in. Overrated.

Sakamichi no Apollon. A run of the mill school romance that was rated so high only because Watanabe directed the anime adaptation. And it was still average even then. Ridiculously overrated.

Vinland Saga. In a way this is like a second Berserk, amazing up to a point, and then loses a lot of steam because of a timeskip. Easily the best manga about Vikings and has great artwork, doesn’t remain great all the way but still deserves a spot in the tops.

Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan. A short manga about the beuty of life. Way too emotional without having that much content or theme exploration, easily making it very overrated.

One Piece. Although the best never-ending fighting shonen, it has been slowly degrading after the Alabasta arc, with everything that happens after the time skip being a complete waste of time. This boat’s quality sailed a long time ago.

Akira. Just like it happens with Nausicaa, the manga is way longer and far more detailed, easily making it a mesmerizing psychological drama full of action and violence, even if its themes are quite silly. Not amazing but it deserves its spot.

Vagabond. I personally didn’t like it. The faces look very dopey, the story is very simple, the plot is very slow, and I generally didn’t care about any of the characters. But I accept how as a samurai flick it has amazing artstyle and very captivating presentation, making even the most simple of events to be full of tension and emotional gravity. It deserves its spot.

Kingdom. Although it keeps trying to be an epic tale during the warring states of China, it plays out like a typical fighting shonen, where battles are won by shouting, and where little boys holding wooden swords defeat elite assassins because the plot said so. It’s fucking bullshit.

Skip Beat. Although it is cherished by many for having a dynamic lead heroine, it is otherwise a typical shojo story. Way too long, way too slow, with way too convenient plot, and way too forced romantic relationships. Doesn’t deserve its spot.

Orange. Another run of the mill school romance with bullshit premise and no plot progression for ten million chapters. Doesn’t deserve it.
