Personally I think that’s placebo effect - he knew the full squad was on the rooftop without his drone. If he was going to push the rooftop w any other character, he would have likely pushed the same way he did there. Once combat started, the drone only gave away his knock and the octane behind her, but there was only other one other spot on the rooftop someone would have been, so it made sense to go there anyhow. After he chased the Octane, his drone was no longer in play.

Now, if he had an ult to pop while he pushed, that would have made the fight significantly faster and in my opinion made his argument better. But as it stands, that fight was 90%+ gun play.
