How did you figure out what you wanted to do as a job/career? Teenage girl asking here.

When I went to college, I was obsessed with figuring out what I was destined to do. I grew up with a hardworking mom who followed her dreams and passions, which led her to great success. I thought the same would happen to me.

Unfortunately, I was intellectually interested in everything during college. I made up my mind about my major last-minute and graduated having no idea what I was going to do for a living.

But I needed money. So I applied for whatever and ended up getting a random job completely unrelated to what I'd studied. Something unexpected happened - I loved the job. And I was good at it; I was promoted three times in two years until I was earning a great income in my mid-twenties. I am still incredibly happy with my career choice.

My point is that 1) sometimes it's the culture of the company or industry that "makes" the job, 2) for many people, intellectual interests do not correspond to enjoying the actual work, 3) often, you only know whether you'll like a career once you're knee-deep in it.

Good luck in school!
