How did your “dream job” change as you grew up?

My dream jobs as a teen were all quite high status, exciting, involving travel (i.e. interpretor for the UN, hot shot lawyer etc).

When I graduated, I went into management consulting and had all those things but found it really impacted my ability to have a life, my well-being etc. Friendships were difficult to maintain as I was always away, my health was impacted by long hours, stress and constant eating out, I felt displaced by all the travel. The work was interesting and often at the forefront of the industry but not worth it for the personal impact. I'd look at my seniors and see the impact on their health, family life etc and saw it only got worse.

Now my dream job is something I'll find stimulating enough with good career prospects rather than needing to be the best of the best but involves little to no travel, good colleagues and 9-5 hours! Really it's the lifestyle the job affords me now that is important rather than the job itself.
