How do you tell the difference between holding “controversial” views and simply being an asshole?

I don't see why it matters if you feel bad for them or not after they got deported. If you think it's bad policy, you think it's bad policy.

Also, just to let you know, the way we have enforced our immigration laws has changed a lot during the past few decades. Some people came here at a time when we didn't deport people for being here illegally. Who we deport changes over time. And the way we think about "illegal" immigration changes over time It's not a criminal offense to be here illegally, it's a civil one. And we change the rules (through changes in administrative procedures) about who we deport. At other times, we have provided a pathway to legalization for people who were here illegally. Some people were brought here as children and had no say in the matter, and remain undocumented and subject to deportation. And we also sometimes deport people who are legally here. So, unless you know the details of the case, it's hard to know how to feel about the fact that someone got deported, in my opinion. Just saying a broad, "everyone who gets deported should have known better" isn't accurate.
