Iam John Green--vlogbrother, Crash Course host, redditor, and author of The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns. AMA, part 1 of 4.

Hey John, I've been a long time viewer of the Vlogbrothers, since around 2009. Much has changed since then, you used to be an author who made youtube videos with his brother. Now you're a part of popular culture, you're involved with producing your books as movies, and you and Hank are at the head of a variety of large scale projects on youtube.

In this time, I have personally felt a rather large shift in the community. In the beginning, everything was about the youtube community, and nerdfighteria. Since then, that community has been diluted, people know you via your other projects, and thus you have been forced to put effort into that, rather than the core community of nerdfighters. At the end of the day, you and your work have become "cool".

This is problematic, because I don't think the ideas of nerdfighteria, have been able to be maintained in the group at large. Fans of yours who use tumblr are primarily concerned with feminism and fandom. There are those who simply liked The Fault in our Stars because it's a romantic story. There are people who just think you and Hank are the funny guys on SciShow and CrashCourse. The people here on reddit probably like you because of some of your vlogbrothers videos, informative breakdowns of complex world issues.

So my question is, what happened to just being a nerd on the internet? I get that you want to do all these projects, but I think you have to be deluding yourself if you think the community is as strong and tight-nit as it once was. It now seems like a group of people who enjoy watching at least one piece of the content you produce, rather than an open, community-wide dialog.

Maybe I'm just whinning that nerdfighteria isn't a secret club anymore, or maybe I don't like the way you and the people in this community have changed. Still, if you've managed to make it this far, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
