If the average consensus on Brahmastra turns out to be anywhere close to “average” then I’ll consider that a sense for good writing still eludes most movie going audiences

I would strongly disagree. Taste can be subjective but a poorly cooked meal cannot be rated 7/10 solely on its preparation. Vfx, cameos, music everything is just embellishment used to enhance the core of a film (the core being the script). Even if a film as masala heavy as dabangg would fall short if the writers didn’t touch our hearts with the relationships of the various characters, their arcs and their redemption. The only reason Salman killing Chhedi Singh in the end felt so satisfying with all that action was because the writers made sure I hate chhedi and feel Salman’s anger for what he did to Dimple Kapadia.

  1. I’m not denying VFX isn’t an art but by that logic every Hollywood action film ever created should get a 5/10 at minimum. The reason I mentioned 500th time was to make the point that once a technical feat becomes common place, it doesn’t remain as astounding anymore. When was the last time you saw blood in a Bollywood movie and said “wow yaar what a realistic blood — I can’t rate this movie 2 stars now” ? I doubt incorporating that in your review of something like kick or race 3 would’ve even crossed your mind because we’ve seen realistic blood so many times that now the technical feat is just something we take for granted.

  2. That’s a fair point.

  3. I can assure you that Koi Mil Gaya or Krrish were poorly written films, they wouldn’t be as fondly remembered as they are today. If that wasn’t the the case then Krissh 3 and Ra.One would generate the same respect from masses as the former films did. Heck, Ra.One even had Chammak Challo and Criminal to keep it memorable but evidently as the dust settled, people do remember the songs but very few actually remember the film.
