If (capitalist)states are centers of power that only care about their survival, why do they do "good" thing every once in a while, even though doing those things might politically hurt them?

Even the rich and powerful have genuine sympathies.

Ehhhhh....I don't know about that.

When you look at a corporation, just like when you look at a slave owner, you want to distinguish between the institution and the individual. So slavery, for example, or other forms of tyranny are inherently monstrous.

The individuals participating in them may be the nicest guys you can imagine. Benevolent, friendly, nice to the children, even nice to their slaves. Caring about other people. I mean, as individuals they may be anything, but in their institutional role, they’re monsters, because the institution is monstrous.

Noam Chomsky - The Corporation (2003)

When business "does the right thing" it is usually because it aligns with some other objective. Whether it's public relations or planting seeds for some kind of long term investment, RARELY do they do the right thing based on any kind of moral or ethical consideration.

Granted, smaller businesses have much more leeway on what they choose to do, but multinational corporations? You can pretty much forget it. The bottom line is king.
