If evolution is true, which we can only deduce by experiments and research, and religion exists, which we can see the infrastructure all over the place, what is the evolutionary advantage of religion?

Humanity doesn't evolve biologically anymore, I mean we do, but not on a scale that is noticeable to the anyone not looking at a bigger picture of our species.

We evolve socially, we develop new social orders, new behaviors, gain better understanding of eachother etc.

Religions started as a tool for explaining the unexaplaininable. "what the fuck was that loud bang?" is easily answerable with "Thor, God of lightning, don't worry about it" even to an idiot, whereas trying to explain the science of lightning and thunder to a layperson when the science hasn't even been done yet is impossible.

Eventually, they became tool for control when it became clear that all they had to do was convince people that Thor will use his lightning on THEM if they don't also follow these rules that conveniently fit into the society they were developed within.
