If your house was about to burn down, what would you try to save first?

I was in a house fire several years ago. One of my buddies fell asleep on the porch couch, and was woken up by the window above him exploding from the heat.

He stole the neighbor's garden hose and started spraying down the house instead of trying to wake everyone that was inside up. Although the house was almost fully engulfed so he couldn't go inside at that point, but it just never crossed his mind to check on us through the windows.

People do weird stuff when they are panicking.

Luckily nobody was hurt besides some small scrapes and cuts! The layout of the house and a LOT of luck ended up keeping us safe. It was a one story house so we were able to get out through the windows once we became aware of the fire.
