Inherited 900k, mother pressuring me to buy her a 200k house.

Actually the 'share the wealth' mentality is really common, at least where I live. It has its ups and downs.

A bit of a tangent here, but I'll give my point of view. I am a college student living at home. When I began attending, I received about 2k in excess financial aid for books and transportation. Hardly any books were required and I needed no transportation. So whenever I told my parents about reimbursement, they would tell me that they were two months behind on rent, light was about to be cut off and similar things. Since I had no real need for the money, I split it in half with my parents, since I live with them for free and they provide me food. This became the norm every semester until a scholarship expired and I was out of the usual 2k. I let my parents know and, guess what? Thay told me ' it's fine, we're just happy you're in college. Keep studying and don't worry about us.' I've been living with them for 2 years after that and they don't ask me for rent or any thing.

Same with the family. If one comes across some extra money, thay invite the rest to a treat.

However, if I were to drop out and just live there, I would be seen as a parasite and be met with hostility, so their patience is not unconditional.

Anyways, it's a bit hard to get ahead financially in this situation because everyone expects you to share, and everyone would see you as greedy if you were to suggest saving the money for a future investment (or you'd get something along the lines of "I have a great investment idea that only requires x amount of cash", x being what they think you have, and would get offended if you reject their idea.). Since everyone shares (Father provides housing, mother provides food, you provide... IDK, help around the house and internet?) no one likes to see you helping just yourself while you receive help from them and then don't pay back the favor.

So what are your thoughts on this 'all for one and all for one' mentality?
