It's because of his fanbase (like you said, edgy teens, as well as mostly Gamers™) combined with media writing articles taking things out of context, twisting things, etc. And then of course he's pretty well-known, even to people who don't really spend much time on YouTube. So basically you get news articles spouting shit about how he's a Nazi and then the "woke" people that know literally 0 about him go "yeah, that's sounds right!" People are literally fucking blaming him for massacres in this thread, now. I expect this kind of ignorant bullshit from the type of people his fans are, but I certainly don't expect it from the type of people in this sub.
